If you have diabetes, you body does not produce enough of a hormone called insulin, or you body does not use the hormone it has properly. Insulin helps the human body use sugar (glucose) for energy. If untreated, diabetes can cause blindness, neurological and vascular disorders that brings on foot or leg amputation, heart attack, stroke, kidney failure and death. There are two types of diabetes. Type 1 occurs when the human body does not produce insulin at all. People suffering from type 2 diabetes either suffer from insulin deficiency, or their cells ignore the insulin their body makes. About 95% of people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes. This is sometimes also called "non-insulin dependent" or "adult-onset" diabetes. KNOW YOUR RISK You are at higher risk of type 2 diabetes, if it runs in your family. Type 2 diabetes is much more frequently observed in African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans or Pacific Americans. If you gave birth to a baby that weighed more than 9 pounds and/or if you had gestational diabetes when you were pregnant, you are also at high risk of diabetes. Males and Females over 45 are also at higher risk. CHANGES ARE NECESSARY Unfortunately, you cannot do anything to change your age, ethnicity or family history, but there are a few factors that you can take control of. Your diabetes risk also increases, if you are corpulent, you do not do physical exercise on a regular basis and/or you have an unhealthy diet. If you are aware that you are at risk, making proper choices about what you eat and drink and exercise can help you stay healthy. In fact, studies have shown that being on a nutritious diet and doing exercise can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes. If you are corpulent, keep in mind that obesity is the single most important risk factor for type 2 diabetes. 80% - 90% of people with diabetes are estimated to be overweight. Losing weight and watching it can help hold diabetes at bay. Eat a variety of products, including high-fiber products. Try to consume less than 30% of your daily calories from fat foods. Also, watch your portion. Note that any amount of physical activity is much better than none. Ride an exercise bicycle while you view the evening news or your favorite sitcom. Most of all, make sure you find an activity you like, so you will stick with it. Hence, eating right and exercising are the keys to achieving and sustaining a healthy weight.
